Plain and Ornamental Forging Ernst Schwarzkopf 9781295803224 Books Reviews

This is an excellent reprint of an early 20th century blacksmithing text. The pictures are clear, the text explains in detail all processes, and is written for anyone who wishes to improve their skills and learn new ones at the anvil. An excellent recourse for the beginning to advanced blacksmith.
Good beginner book. There is a good section on a blacksmith course with some good instruction on forging. The pictures could be a little better and the drawing seems done on a computer.Good reference material to add to an existing library
Written in 1916 and in the days when blacksmithing was still widely practised and the standards were high this was intended as a high school text book. This is a comprehensive text on all aspects of basic forging. The drawings are a bit awkward by modern standards and the explanations are rather brief since it was expected that an instructor would be present to fill in the details. A no nonsense text intended to train craftsmen, there is none of the touchy feely stuff that one encounters in some modern smithing. Projects are to be executed to exact dimensions and to rigorous standards. As a source of traditional techniques it far outranks Bealer's "The Art of Blacksmithing", which I consider to be of value only for nostalgic reasons.

On the strength of the content alone, this book is a must have for anyone who is serious about learning the craft. But the strongest endorsement comes from Frank Turley. Turley together with Bealer are considered to be almost entirely responsible for the modern renaissance in smithing. A generation ago almost every smith in the US had learned from Turley or from one of his students. Frank says the he taught himself entirely from this book and still uses it as his primary reference. It's his smithing "bible".

When Bealer died, the Bealer award was created to honor smiths who made a significant contribution to the craft. The blacksmithing equivalent of the Noble prize. Turley was the recipient of the first Bealer award and at the time was told that had he died before Bealer, then Bealer would have been the recipient of the first Turley award.
If you are just starting out in blacksmithing, this is an ok elementary book. It is also a good book to add to your library of blacksmithing books. After all, this was a text book back in it's day.
No beginning blacksmith should be without this book. Most beginners start out with a knowledgeable friend, or internet vids. This book has the math you're not likely to get from either in this age to make an accurate forging. It also covers basics and fundamentals in an easy to understand format.
This is a reprint of an old time book which is available online. I had read in it online, loved it, and wanted a paper copy to be able to write in, use more easily in the shop, and in general enjoy. The edition here preserves the text of the original but does not have the illustrations and as such is a total waste. I hardly ever return an item but I am completely dissatisfied with this purchase and plan to return the book. Providing the text of a how-to-book to the reader but omitting the diagrams and illustrations is absurd.
